Imaging biomarkers and radiomics: techniques and clinical applications with a focus on cancer

Nikolaos Papanikolaou is, since 2016, a Principal Investigator in Oncologic Imaging at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal and, since 2009, the founder and CEO of the “N. Papanikolaou & Associates” enterprise, which provides a comprehensive plan of services to support state of the art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clinical applications. He obtained his BSc in biomedical engineering at the Technological Institute of Athens, and his MSc and PhD from the Medical School of University of Crete, the latter on the topic of “Technical Development and Clinical Evaluation of Novel Imaging Techniques of the Gastrointestinal Tract with MRI” under the supervision of Prof. N. Gourtsoyiannis. He worked for Philips Medical Systems from 1991 to 1998, and joined the MR Clinical Science department in Best, The Netherlands, for six months. He was a research associate at the department of Radiology, University Hospital of Heraklion from 1999 to 2009, and an MR Applications Consultant for Siemens Healthcare from 2002 to 2009. Throughout his career, he has published 63 scientific papers in peer reviewed international journals, 15 chapters in international books, and delivered 72 lectures in international congresses and educational courses. He served as a member of editorial board of European Radiology in the section of experimental radiology, while he was a member of abdominal subcommitee of ECR from 2007 to 2009. He has been awarded with several scientific prizes and he has received 2 research schoolarships from ECR. Finally, he was awarded as an honorary member of the Spanish Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology (SEDIA) and a fellow in ESGAR. In 2014, he became an affiliated researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm and at the Institute of Computer Science, FORTH, Heraklion.
